The Caplan Building

The Caplan Building

This seven-story, unreinforced masonry building underwent a complete seismic upgrade. Miller Consulting Engineers, Inc. was instrumental in the success of this project by providing engineering support services for the general contractor (R & H Construction).

MCE's role in the project was design and detailing of temporary shoring which allowed the floors to be detached from the walls.  This was instrumental in allowing the contractor to complete the necessary seismic connections to strengthen the building.

MCE was also instrumental in identifying deterioration at the fire escapes that were also strengthened.  To complete this project we were required to work closely with the contractor and the City of Portland to develop load testing requirements for the fire escape. Our knowledge of the requirements for fire escape testing in combination with our design expertise allowed the project to progress without delay.

Key benefits provided to our client as a result of our construction support services include:

  • Development of structural recommendations quickly
  • Accurate design information
  • Rapid response to the client's questions and concerns.
